Abstract:
Road traffic accidents recently become one of the most serious problems in many country, the
demand for the road network has influenced the increase in the number of vehicles, and the
population has increased towards the cities; these factors contribute to the increase in traffic
accidents. Gambella in general and the Itang-Lare road in particular have faced safety
challenges due to increased traffic, population growth and poor existing roads with
insufficient road safety facilities. A sample size of 158 was determined to represent
pedestrians, drivers, road users, and road users participating in the study. Two types of data
combining primary and secondary data were collected: primary data obtained in the field
using a questionnaire and accident data obtained from police stations. Literature reviews and
the SPSS package were used to analyse both data. The results of the analysis were displayed
in the form of tables and graphs, and then interpreted and discussed depending on the
research objectives. Based on the results of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:
467 different accidents were detected, of which 70 were fatal, 161 were serious, 194 were
minor, and 44 were material damage, respectively. Human error, including traffic violations
by drivers, such as speeding, and pedestrians' failure to yield to speeding vehicles, has caused
serious damage to people and property. Not only that, drivers under the age of 18 and those
operating illegally without a license caused more accidents than the other groups studied. In
order to solve existing problems related to traffic accidents, it is recommended to consider the
issues of monitoring the implementation of traffic rules, ensuring traffic safety on the road
section, and increasing the awareness of road users. Mitigation techniques such as Post-Strict
and Road Safety Installation have been proposed to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
