Abstract:
Background: Overnutrition is an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health.
Hypertension is the most powerful, independent, preventable risk factor for death and disability
from cardiovascular diseases. There is a statistically significant association between body mass
index (BMI) ≥ 25 and hypertension. But there is limited evidence on the prevalence of overweight
/obesity and the associated factors among hypertensive patients in Ethiopia.
Objectives: To determine the magnitude and associated factors of overnutrition among
hypertensive patients attending Jimma University Medical Center.
Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted among 292 hypertensive patients from June 23 to
July 21 2022 GC in Jimma University Medical Center. Hypertensive patients who had been on
follow-up were included using a consecutive sampling technique in the study. Data were collected
using a structured questionnaire was entered into Epi Data version 3.1, and analyzed by SPSS
version 25.Descriptive statistics were computed to describe the study population. Bivariate and
multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the associated factors for
overnutrition among hypertensive patients. Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence
interval and p-value <0.05 was used to determine the level of significant association.
Results: The magnitude of overnutrition was 44.5%.The study shows being female [AOR=2.74
95% CI 1.50-4.99], having high school education and above [AOR=2.79 95% CI .23-6.34] and
having co-morbidity [AOR=1.93 95% CI 1.14-3.26] were significantly associated with
overnutrition.
Conclusion: This study has disclosed the high magnitude of overnutrition among hypertensive
patients. Sex of the participant, educational status, and co-morbidity were found to be significantly
associated with overnutrition
