Abstract:
Background: Contraception is the use of various devices, medicines or methods to prevent
pregnancy. Long-acting reversible family planning (LARFP) methods are the most effective and
safe types of modern contraception with a high success rate even if most women are not using it
due to different reasons. To the knowledge of the invesigator, there is limited evidence that there
is a study conducted about the perception of long-acting reversible contraceptives among
postpartum mothers in the study area. Thus, this study is aimed to fulfil this gap.
Objective: To assess the perception towards the use of long-acting reversible family planning
methods and associated factors among postpartum mothers in the public hospitals of Jimma town,
southwest Ethiopia,2022.
Method: A facility-based cross-sectional study design was employed from June to July, 2022 in
Jimma town public hospitas. A total of 392 respondents were involved in the study by using a
consecutive sampling technique. Data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. It was
coded, edited, and cleaned, then entered into the computer by using Epidata 4.6 version and
exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was employed
to identify the significant predictors of the mothers’ perception towards the use of long-acting
reversible contraceptives. Finally, data was presented with tables, percentages, and narrations.
Results፡ A total of 392 respondents gave complete response which yielded 100% response rate.
The level of perception of the postpartum mothers towards LARC use was 52.8% (95% CI:48.5-
55.6). The marital status of the mothers, married (AOR=0.5 (0.16,0.86),educational status of the
mother with primary school (AOR=1.5 (1.24,4.9)), and with college and above (AOR=1.4
(1.17,2.1),residence of the respondents (AOR=2 (95%CI:1.1,2.4), being government employee
( AOR = 2.23; 95% CI: 1.8, 4.5),having information about long-acting reversible contraceptives
(AOR = 2.5; 95% CI: 2.0, 5.9),and counseled effectiveness of the LARC before insertion of it
(AOR=0.25 ;95%CI:0.085, 0.79) had significant associations with perceptions towards LARC.
Conclusion and recommendation: This finding revealed that the perception towards LARC use
among postpartum mothers in public hospitals of Jimma town is relatively high as compared to
previous studies. The variables: marital status of the mothers, educational status of the mothers
with primary school and with college and above, residence of the respondents, being government
employee, having information about long-acting reversible contraceptives and counseled
effectiveness of the LARC before insertion of it had significant association with perception of
postpartum mothers towards the use of long-acting reversible contraceptives. Thus, working on
significant factors towards perception of LARC to increase the level of good perception is found
to be one of vital reccommendations. It is also recommended that, future qualitative research
further explore perceptions of LARC use
