The purpose of this study was to investigate the Stakeholders Perception of Role of Guidance
and Counseling in solving Learners academic and Disciplinary Problems in Secondary Schools
of Jimma City Administration. A mixed research approach, descriptive design was employed.
About 380 secondary school teachers, students, supervisors and PTA were selected using simple
random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. Questionnaire, interview and FGD were
used to collect data. A descriptive analysis (percentage, mean and standard deviation) were used
to analyze quantitative data. Moreover, thematic analysis was applied to the obtained qualitative
data. The result indicates there is noted disciplinary and academic problems related to
absenteeism, late coming to school, leave the school without permission, leave school before
school closing time, students fight in school, violate school rules and regulations. With regard to
students usage of counseling service where available, the result revealed (M=1.607, SD=.48)
which is low status. Moreover, poor and /or absence of school counseling service practice and
need for the service delivery implies counseling service has role in halting student’s disciplinary
and academic problems. To conclude, even though there is poor service delivery practice, there
is a strong need for counseling service provision among educational stakeholders to lessen
problematic academic and disciplinary practices .Therefore, education sector and other
pertinent bodies should establish an effective and efficient guidance and counseling services
among secondary school in Jimma town |
