Abstract:
Most Non-Governmental Organizations are involved in areas of development and poverty alleviation through a spectrum of activities to deliver basic services. However, sustainability of the donor funded project outcomes still face a myriad of challenges. This study assessed factors
influencing project sustainability n world Vision Ethiopia of Omonada Area program. The study developed research hypotheses to test the relationship of variables. Accordingly, Strategic Management, monitoring and evaluation and stakeholder involvement were assessed in relation to the project sustainability. A explanatory research design was adopted with a target population involving project beneficiaries, stakeholders and World Vision staffs. 101 respondents were sampled using the systematic random sampling. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data which was edited, coded and analyzed using descriptive and inferential analysis with aid of SPSS. Furthermore, key Informant Interview was used to substantiate the quantitative findings. Study found that project stakeholders and beneficiaries were not adequately involved in monitoring and evaluation of activities. Stakeholder involvement and community participation influences project sustainability. The Study further revealed that there is no practice of conducting project monitoring after project outcome are delivered and also the organization is not flexible enough in accommodating changes within the changing context. However Strategic management, monitoring and evaluation and stakeholder involvement had strong positive relationships with project sustainability. Regression results explained 72.2% of the sustainability of projects. The community should be involved and participate in all phases of projects and own the projects. Beneficiaries should be linked to local service providers for continuity to ensure project sustainability
