Abstract:
Background: Foreign body aspiration is a common medical emergency that can occur in both
children and adults.it happens when an object is inhaled into the lungs, leading to partial or
complete obstruction of the airway. Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a life threatening event and
one of most common causes of mortality in children. The level of awareness and knowledge about
foreign body aspiration is alarmingly low among care givers and medical professionals.
Methods: Institution based cross sectional study was conducted among medical interns at JMC
from Sep- Feb, 2024. Census was used. Data was collected from 237 participants using Google
forms. The collected data was entered in to Microsoft Excel and then exported in to SPSS version
26 for analysis. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize the study variables. Univariable and
multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the association between the outcome and
independent variables. P-value < 0.05 and the Odds ratio with 95% confidence interval were used
to show the significance and the strength of association respectively.
RESULT: in this study, a total of 260 participants were involved, and the response rate was
91.5%. Most respondents, 122(51.5 %%) were male with male to female ratio of 1.06:1.
The Average age of respondents was 25.68 years with minimum and maximum age of 20 and 36
years respectively.
Only 49.8% (118) of respondents scored above the average on the knowledge questions, indicating
an adequate level of knowledge. However, 72.6% of participants scored below 80% on the
practice-related questions about foreign body aspiration and choking first aid, suggesting a lack of
sufficient practical skills in handling such situations.
