Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to assess factors affecting municipal solid waste management in
Ethiopia: The case of Jimmat Town and recommending possible solutions. The study also tried
to answer the research questions accordingly. To this effect, the thesis was conducted in Jimma
town Selected kebeles. Accordingly, four kebeles and 200 sampled house holders were included
using simple random sampling. Questionnaires (open and close ended) was the main data
gathering tool. An interview, observation and document analysis were conducted to validate the
quantitative data. The quantitative data collected by using questionnaire was analyzed and
interpreted by using mean scores and standard deviation. Percentage was also used during the
analysis of the background information of the respondents. The qualitative data collected
through interview was analyzed qualitatively by relating in line with quantitative data. Each of
the sampled households were categorized according to their sex, age, educational level, per
capita income, household size, and household occupational to assess associations with solid
waste management.
According to the result of data analysis, the following major findings were identified. The
findings of the study revealed that the problem of municipal solid waste management in the town
became increased from time to time. The findings of this study also demonstrated that; most of
the community members under the study area do not adequately participate in solid waste
management due to the reasons such as perception that it is largely a responsibility of local
authorities and lack of appropriate laws enforcement and even enforcement of the existing laws.
Similarly, the major factors which affect effective municipal solid waste management were
financial factors, technical factors; social factors and institutional factors.Finally, researcher
recommended that government should encourage the private service providers through clear
institutional structure and create community awareness about effective municipal solid waste
management’s.
