Abstract:
Background. Patient satisfaction is an important issue that affects overall health status of patients and implicit patient’s future expectations. It is a subjective concept that involves physical, emotional, psychological, social, and cultural factors. Studying patient satisfaction is invaluable in conceptualizing problems that patients experience from spinal anesthesia, and it points to improvements in healthcare and the quality of anesthesia. Incorporating patients’ opinion into quality assessments is determinant in making health services more responsive to community needs.
Objective- to assess level of maternal satisfaction and associated factors among parturients undergoing cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia at Jimma university medical center, Ethiopia.
Methodology: Institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from October to December, 2022. A total of 160 parturients were enrolled to assess maternal satisfaction using a 5-point Likert scale. Both bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were done. Variables of p value ≤0.25 in the bivariable analysis were a candidate for multivariable logistic regression. A p value <0.05 was considered as significantly associated with maternal satisfaction at 95% CI.
Result; This study revealed that 135 (84.4 %) of the parturients were satisfied. Single spinal prick attempts (AOR 3.5 95% CI (1.16 – 11.1) , successful spinal block (AOR 5.4, 95% CI (1.10 – 27.10), less incidence of post operative surgical site pain (AOR 4.85 , 95% CI (1.57 – 14.9), and absence of preoperative anesthetic evaluation and provision of preoperative information (AOR 3.5 95% CI (1.16 – 11.1) were positively associated with maternal satisfaction.
Conclusions; The overall maternal satisfaction receiving spinal anesthesia was considerably low. Single spinal prick attempts, successful spinal block, and less incidence of postoperative surgical site pain can increase maternal satisfaction. Therefore, effective perioperative evaluation and pain management, and skillful spinal anesthesia techniques, may increase the maternal satisfaction and quality of spinal anesthesia management
