dc.description.abstract A foundation is the part of a structure which transmits the weight of the structure to underlying soil formationwithout overstressing the soil. Hence a safe foundation design provides for a suitable safety factor against Overall shear failure in the soil that supports it and Excessive displacement. Determination of soil bearing capacity and foundation design based on hand calculation is so much time consuming. Thus, aims of this Project have been the development of a user-friendly computer program for determination of soil bearing capacity and design of isolated footing. In the hope of achieving these goals a computer program named SFD has been developed with Microsoft visual basic 2010 programming languagebased on EBCS. The program demands small effort from the user and provides the user with the ability to determine bearing capacity of soil and design isolated footing. The analysis abilities comprises of uniform soil layer and stratified soil layer (with stratification up to six layers). Several improvements can be made to SFD, most important of which could be the inclusion of dynamic loading and 3D graphical output en_US
