Abstract:
This study assesses biogas energy production potential of municipal solid wastes in Lafto
Atikilt Tera; on vegetable and fruits leftover in the city’s main fruits and vegetable market
Lafto Atikilt Tera. The study tried to answer these questions: What is the biogas potential level
of fruits and vegetable waste? How much biogas energy is produced from Lafto Atikilt Tera
shopping area? What are the consumers’ perceptions on the production and use of biogas
energy from Lafto Atikilt Tera shopping area in Addis Ababa? The general objective of this
study was to assess biogas energy production potential from solid waste VFW. The researcher
tried to collect both primary and secondary data. An observation was made on Atikilt Tera-the
biggest fruits and vegetable market; REPI Power Station. The data gathered from Atikilt Tera
waste collectors on the amount of leftover/dirt wasn’t fully satisfactory; as a result, the
researcher headed to REPI power station. The data collected shows the amount of fruits and
vegetable leftover for 9 months. Purposive sampling was done to select the days of the month.
The data shows the 9th up to 12th day of each month. That is from 18 / 02/ 2022 until 31 / 10/
2022. The data gathered was analysed using inferential statistics and with the help of SPSS.
The findings of this research show that there are good indicators which promise the city and
its dwellers with a great deal of untouched biomass energy which satisfies their power
consumption if used scientifically. The researcher concluded the following: The daily amount
of fruits and vegetables waste was calculated to be 18,850 kg. The annual amount of fruits and
vegetables waste was calculated to 6,880,250kg kg. The amount of daily biogas energy that
can be produced from FVW was calculated to be 18,550 MJ. The amount of annual biogas
energy production was calculated to be 4,965,838.943MJ. Hence, the researcher recommends
the following: The government is currently paying a huge amount of money for the waste
disposal (16,776.5 birr daily) which is 0.89 birr/kg of VFW. This money could be used to
implant a biogas plant in the outskirt of the city to provide the society with sustainable energy
source.
