dc.description.abstract The primary goal of this study was to assess play equipment and children's participation in outdoor play learning activities: the case of selected preschools in Gambella Town, Gambella Regional State. The study employed a qualitative case study design. Thematic data analysis was used to describe themes in accordance with the study objectives. Data were generated through focus group discussions, interviews and observations in three purposively selected preschools (one private and two missionary schools). Thirty-six participants (24 participants i.e., four preschool teachers and four preschool administrative boards’ members from each preschool participated in interviews), and (12 parents i.e., four from each preschool participated in FGD) participated in the study. Observations were conducted to examine the types and safety of the play equipment available, the roles played by teachers in the provision of outdoor play equipment, and participation level of children in outdoor play activities. The study has shown a scarcity of adequate and safe outdoor play equipment, parents’ lack of awareness and knowledge about the importance of outdoor play equipment for their children, a lack of training for parents and awareness on the value of outdoor play equipment, and lack of awareness by preschool teachers on the proper provision and supervision of outdoor play equipment for children. It is concluded that the participation of preschool children in outdoor play in the selected preschools is not to the expected level to bring much influence on children’s learning and development. It is recommended that the preschools studied provide enough outdoor play equipment for children to use in an outdoor setting, and that frequent inspections are undertaken to ensure that the outdoor play equipment is adequate, safe and effectively utilized. Mechanisms should be in place to make preschool teachers and parents of preschool children fully aware of their role in the utilization of outdoor play equipment to enhance children’s learning and development. en_US
