Abstract
Automatic Generation Control (AGC) has gained its importance due to getting quality
of electricity and the structure of the interconnected electric power system to sustain the
frequency and tie line powers are within their allowed standard values. This thesis work
is applicable to the fractional order sliding mode controller for Automatic Generation
Control in a nonlinear model of an interconnected electric power System. A Fractional
Order of Sliding Mode Controller is applied to three areas of a nonlinear interconnected
electric power system. The nonlinearities that are physical constraints such as governor
dead band and generation rate constraints are considered in the block diagram of the
power plant model system. The objective of the control is to regulate the frequency
deviation (load frequency error) and tie-line power deviation (tie-line power error) of
the interconnected power system in the presence of different load changes (sudden load
change frequency), parameter uncertainty (variation), and physical constraint exist.
The fractional order sliding mode controller (FOSMC) is simulated on the three areas
of an interconnected power system with nonlinearities. These designs show the best
result of the proposed controller FOSMC with numerical value of frequency deviation
-6.8912e-4Hz and tie line power deviation -2.9765e-5p.u. When FOSMC compared with
SMC the frequency deviation -2.0762e-3 Hz and tie line power deviation -1.21754e-3
p.u. and also for PID controller frequency deviation -3.5918e-3 Hz and ti line power
deviation -1.56025e-3 p.u. have less nominal values of the proposed system. These
comparisons also show that FOSMC has the most effective performance, such as less
overshoot 1.5545e-4, undershoot -5.4823e-4, rising time 1.00042e-8, and less settling
time 2.688 even when their are parameter variation, load change, and nonlinearities
system existed. The system model controllers have been designed and simulated on
MATLAB/Simulink.
