Abstract:
The construction industry in Ethiopia, particularly in Tarcha Town, is a significant
contributor to the nation's economic development. However, it also generates a
significant amount of construction waste, which poses significant environmental
challenges. The aim of this research is to assess the existing construction waste
management practice and challenges that hinders the implementation of sustainable
construction waste management in Tarcha town, to propose some suggestions how to
improve implementation of sustainable construction waste management by promoting
roles of construction professionals in building projects within Tarcha Town, Dawro
Zone, South West Ethiopia.
This investigation implemented a mixed-method approach, which integrated
qualitative and quantitative data collection methodologies. The totals of 70
questionnaires were distributed to professionals working in construction industry to
collect primary data. Secondary data were obtained from a variety of published and
unpublished documents. The reliability of the research was verified by calculating
Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, and the data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel and
SPSS software.
The findings of the study revealed that sustainable construction waste management
practices are acknowledged; however, their implementation is inconsistent. The main
challenges identified are a lack of technical skills, insufficient market infrastructure
for
sustainable technologies, inadequate government policies, and limited
stakeholders’ awareness. The study also revealed the critical role of construction
professionals in promoting sustainability standards, influencing market practices, and
providing training, even though the mentioned challenges frequently hinder these
projects.
In conclusion, the research emphasizes the necessity of targeted interventions to
overcome the challenges to sustainable construction waste management in Tarcha
Town. The following are suggested: augmenting training programs for construction
professionals, strengthening government policies, improving access to sustainable
technologies, and increasing stakeholders’ awareness. The construction industry in
this region must implement these measures to achieve its overall sustainability
objectives. The implementation of these recommendations will make a substantial
contribution to the reduction of environmental impacts associated with construction
activities. It will also contribute to a more sustainable future for the building
construction industry in Tarcha Town.
