Abstract:
In construction projects, many human resources issues lead to poor project performance such as
poor project work design and structure, shortage of qualified skilled employees, changing work
force demography, a high rate of employee turnover and high rate of burnout. In order to
improve human resource management structure and system in the construction industry, Human
Resource Management practices are being developed and implemented as it is vital to the
effective functioning and the performance of projects in construction industry.
The main objective of the study was to assess the effects of Human resource management
practices on CPP in Jimma town. The study used both primary and secondary data sources. The
research tool was a questionnaire and interview. A questionnaire constituted closed ended items
and the researcher used likert scale items. Data were analyzed and interpreted using descriptive
statistics and inferential statistics based on SPSS version 20 software. Descriptive analysis was
used to identify the HRM practices and demographic information used by the construction
companies and Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship of HRM
practices with project performance. From a distributed total of 42 questionnaires, a total of 35
professional employees from the project participants responded to the survey. The results show,
human resource management practices are identified and analyzed. Based on the Pearson
correlation test all the HRM practices have moderate, and strong significant correlation results
at a 1% significant level. From the findings, Human Resource Management practices have
positive significant relationship with CPP. The main conclusion made here is that human
resources management practices are influence on CPP. The study therefore, recommends that
the results of the research can provide proof and insights and encourage construction firms to
implement effective HRM practices to improve project performance in the future. The report
ends with some appendices on the questionnaires and interview questions for construction
professional stakeholders.
