Abstract:
Concrete is observed to be very weak in tension and exhibits somehow brittle type of failure.
This problem is often reduced by the addition of different types of fibers in concrete mix.
This study considers adding a certain percentage of steel waste fiber in concrete mix and
examines its effect on concrete compressive strength, concrete flexural strength, concrete
split tensile strength, and its effect on workability of fresh concrete. The experimental
procedure contains determination of concrete and steel waste fiber material properties. The
percentages of the steel fiber(SWF) used in the concrete mix are 0.5%, 1%, and 2% of the
total volume of concrete. The tests are conducted at the age of 7
𝑡ℎ and 28𝑡ℎ days of
concrete to determine the effects of steel fiber(SWF) at early and hardened stage of
concrete. From the result of laboratory tests the effects of steel fiber(SWF) on concrete
stress strain, crack pattern, load versus deflection and workability is investigated. From the
results, it is observed that an addition of steel fiber(SWF) in concrete mix has a significant
effect on split tensile strength and flexural strength. However, it has a little effect on
concrete compressive strength. The effects of steel fiber(SWF) beyond the peak load have
also been examined and it is observed that the steel fiber increased the ductility of the
concrete.
