Abstract:
In today’s world, the utilization of Agricultural waste materials has been of great interest
and much attention. due to its many negative environmental consequences such as global
warming during burning, offensive smells, and breeding ground for mosquito during
accumulation. In Jimma Coffee husk, Mango seed coat and Sawdust are more available
and could be beneficial in its usage as a ceiling board.
This research was undertaken to determine the suitability of those waste as ceiling board,
to determine the chemical composition of raw materials, to investigate the physical
properties of the ceiling board, and comparing to standard requests.
A Laboratory was conducted. A total of 120 specimens were prepared by processing the
raw material that was collected, dried, ground with size a of 2.5mm, blended with 2.5g
Urea-formaldehyde per liter according to 8 proportioned mix ratios placed in to the
prepared plastic mold; lastly it compacted.
The chemical composition values show that both the fiber and lignin content of sawdust
was recorded 24.24%, 8.3% and 33.1%, 23.29% higher than Mango seed coat and Coffee
husk, respectively. Likewise, Moisture content of Mango seed coat increment by 19.75%,
17.8% from Sawdust, and Coffee husk correspondingly. Again, the ash content of Coffee
husk was 46.67%, 36.99% higher than mango seed coat, and sawdust. Similarly, the
physical properties values which are water absorption values are between 4.9-20%, that
was higher than 3% compared to standard, and that of thermal conductivity is between
0.0939-0.1935%W/mK that was less than 0.19W/mK compared to standard. Whereas, the
flexural strength lied between 0.019-0.041N/mm2
that was less than 0.065 N/mm2
compared
to standard. Likewise, the flaking test is between 3.58-6.06g although, the compressive
strength values are 0.1mpa was recorded. Also, they have a better value in terms of thermal
conductivity compared to standard requests by national building material test center.
Therefore, it can be conclude that the agricultural by-product such as Coffee husk, Mango
seed coat, and Sawdust could be used as raw materials for the ceiling board. Moreover,
the community should give special attention to use it.
