Abstract:
Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a hepatotropic partially double-stranded DNA virus
that infects Liver cells, hepatocytes, and recognized as the prototype of a family of
hepadnaviruses. Because of their occupational exposure, Health care workers (HCWs) are at
highest risk of acquiring HBV infection. WHO recommends vaccination for all HCWs.HBV
vaccine is a very safe and effective vaccine that has been reducing incidence of HCC,
mortality due to fulminant hepatic failure, and mortality due to chronic liver diseases
dramatically.
Objective: To assess HBV vaccination status and associated factors among HCWs working at
JUMC.
Methodology: Institution based cross sectional study design was employed to assess HCWs
HBV vaccination status and associated factors from October 1 st to 14 th , 2022. Stratified
sampling technique with proportional allocation was used to calculate sample size. Data was
entered into the Epi-data version 3.1 and analyzed using SPSS version 21. Both bivariate
and multivariable logistic regression models was used. Variables which have p-value less
than 0.25 in bivariate analysis was considered as candidate for multivariable analysis while
variables which have p-value less than 0.05 in multivariable logistic regression model was
considered as statistically significant.
Result; The study was done on 296 study participants out of 309 candidate participant with a
response rate of 95.7%. The full hepatitis B vaccination status was found to be 48% among
the HCWs. Training on infection Prevention, Knowledge about HBV infection and
vaccination was found to be significantly associated with vaccination status on multivariate
logistic regression model.
Conclusion; The study result showed that there is low level of full hepatitis B vaccination
status among HCWs at the study area
