Abstract:
Construction can be identified as a labour intensive industry which carries heavy reliance upon
the skills of laborers. Skillful labour force is one of the vital elements for the continuity and
successful implementation of construction projects. It has been identified that the performance of
laborers neither been measured quantitatively nor qualitatively in the construction industry.
Hence, there is no standard to recruit labour with a perfect understanding of their level of
performance and consequently, the industry will face many difficulties in identifying the right
crew to complete the project as per the required standard within specified time and money.
Hence, this study attempts to address the problems associated with skills of laborers in building
projects. Accordingly, the aim of this research was to assessment of skilled labor performance on
building construction projects: in case of Civil Service University.
A comprehensive literature survey was carried out to identify the characteristics of skilled labor
those participate, the key factors which affect the effects of poor skilled labour performance and
improve the existing performance of skilled labor in building construction projects. The survey
approach was selected as the most suitable research approach due to the quantitative and
qualitative nature of the study. The questionnaires and ten semi-structured interviews were
conducted by random selection of project managers, quantity surveyors, site engineers for the
interviews and laborers for questionnaire survey. Analysis was used to analyze data
collected from interviews and the data collected from questionnaires were analyzed using
statistical methods such as binomial test and Relative Importance Index (RII).
Based on the analysis, the conclusions were drawn and recommendations were put forward.
From the observation indicated that the major characteristics of skilled labor those who are
participated in building construction reason was Ability to work in harmony with others as 1st
ranked with RII value of 0.907 of the participants agreed. As the result indicated that from the
main 5 group of 32 factors Management factors group was ranked as 1st and 2nd with RII value
0.907 and 0.898 respectively and followed with that of motivation and project factor group with
the effect of poor skilled performance so like that of the positive one it have also so many effects
like High cost of the project which was ranked from first with RII value of 0.902.
Workers and skilled labor are generally necessary. Put another way, organizations that value
effectiveness, output, dependability, loyalty, and a happy workplace ought to be investing in their Employees by providing them with access to further training, education, and opportunities
professional advancement.
