Abstract:

motivation and job performance in secondary schools of Metekel Zone. A correlational
design was employed. The study was carried out under randomly selected twelve secondary
schools of Metekel Zone. A total of 265 individuals were participated in the study. Among
them 227 teachers were included as a sample through simple random sampling technique
especially lottery method. In addition, 12 secondary school principals, 11 deputy principals 7
cluster supervisors, 4 Woreda education office heads and 4 Woreda TDP coordinators were
included through purposive sampling technique. Questionnaire and interview were the main
instruments of data collection. The analysis of the quantitative data was carried out by using
percent, mean, standard deviation, T value, correlation and linear regressions. The finding
shows teachers are highly motivated with intrinsic factors. i.e. achievement, recognition,
advancement, responsibility, and work, but an item social respect of teachers from the society
was below the citing point and indications teachers demotivation. The practice of teachers’
job performance is good (M=3.90, SD=0.66, T=7.45). In addition, the findings revealed that
teachers’ motivation have positive and statistically significant relationship with teachers’
job performance. Even if the value of correlation varies in between each independent
variable, the Beta result shows achievement, (β=0.377), responsibility (β=0.337 recognition
(β=0.249) and advancement (β=0.279) with high Beta, statistically significant result were the
major predictors of teachers’ job performance. Finally, as the regression analysis indicates
that, the independent variable was explained by 13.6% of variation on dependent variable.
Based on the findings, it is recommended that to improve the societal respect of teachers in
the study area, school leaders’ should have strategies, implemented in the school and follow
up their proper administration. In addition, the respect and dignity of teachers should be
improved in the eyes of the society by creating continuous awareness toward school teachers,
