dc.description.abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate EFL teachers’ and learners’ perception and practice of using active learning method and challenges they face. To conduct the study, descriptive research design was employed. The study was conducted in Busa Secondary School, South West Shoa Zone ,Oromia Region. The researcher used probability sampling; specifically, systematic random sampling to select samples for questionnaires; and purposive sampling for interviews and classroom observations. The main instruments of data collection were questionnaires, classroom observations and interviews. Both quantitative and qualitative methods of data analysis were employed. Data from questionnaires were analyzed by using frequency and percentage; then, interpreted in words. On the other hand, data from interviews, open-ended questionnaires and classroom observation were analyzed qualitatively. The findings of the study revealed that teachers’ and learners’ have positive perception of active learning method. In spite of their perception, their practices of active learning were rare/ low. Among the challenges that hinder the effective use of active learning method teachers’ and learners’ tendency to lecture method, teachers’ and students’ lack of interest, shortage of time, class size, and lack of resource were the major ones. Therefore, to solve these problems: concerned bodies, such as, school society, government and NGOs should work together to build additional classrooms. en_US
