Abstract:
This study was designed to assess the process and outcomes of using role play in teaching
speaking skill of grade nine students at Alge Secondary School. Thus, it has been tried to discuss
the findings under two main headings. Thus, the first one, an assessment of the process of using
role play was done with the aims of examining the extent to which role play is implemented and
examining what the provision of the activities and what the teachers and students roles looked
like. Accordingly, descriptive research design was used to achieve the objective of the study. The
data has been analyzed using the software SPSS 16.0 and the results indicated that role play was
moderately implemented in teaching of speaking skill with the mean of 3.3 and it was also found
that although the teachers tried to play their roles, the students do not play their roles and it was
also found that the activities provided were not appropriate. As far as the second objective of
the study, an assessment of the outcomes of using role play was concerned, experimental
research design was used. and pre and post oral tests were used to gather the data and the
results of the analysis showed that role play was found to be very helpful for the development of
students speaking skill. Moreover, the results of the t- test analysis of the data obtained from the
pre test showed that there is no significant difference in the speaking skills between the
experimental and control groups. However, the results of the t- test analysis of the data obtained
from the post test showed that there is a significant difference in speaking skills between the
experimental and control groups. There is also a significant difference in the development of
speaking skills between male and female students of the experimental group. Therefore, this
study was concluded by recommending that although the teachers are well aware of the
importance of role play, as there are things that need to be improved, teachers should give due
emphasis to find ways of providing and practicing varieties role playing activities in English
language classes for the development of students speaking skill.
