Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the Effects of Writing Strategies Training on Students’ Writing
Performance and their Attitudes towards Writing: Grade 11 of Algie Secondary School in Focus.
The study used a quasi-experiment design. Non-probability sampling technique which is
purposive sampling was used to select the study area which is Algie secondary school which is
found in Oromia region, Ilu Aba Bor Zone. Furthermore, three data-collection tools (i.e., writing
performance test, attitude questionnaire for students, and interview) were used. To analyze the
data obtained through the performance test, and the questionnaire Independent Sample t-test
was used to compute the mean results. To analyze the data gained through interview, qualitative
method of analysis was used. The results of the writing performance test showed that the
experimental group students did better in their post-test when compared with the pre-test.
Similarly, the results obtained from the attitude questionnaire also confirmed that there was a
statistically significant change of attitude on the experimental group of students who received the
writing strategies training. The results obtained from the interview questions also confirmed the
writing strategies training had brought significant change in students’ performance and attitude
toward writing in an experimental group of students. Lastly, it was concluded that the writing
strategies training given for the experimental group of students was effective for improving
students’ writing and attitude. Finally, it is recommended students at high school level should be
trained in the use of writing strategies to improve their writing performance and change their
attitude towards writing positively.
